National Colloquium on Application of Mass Spectrometry in Biological Research on January 5-7, 2018 @  SRIBS, Pampady, Kottayam



Mass Spectrometryis the most accurate method for determining the molecular mass of a compound and involves the measurement of mass-to-charge ratio of ions. It has become an indispensable tool in biological research which can characterize a wide variety of biomolecules such as sugars, lipids, proteins, olegonucleotides, metabolomics and so on.
The mass spectrometry can be used for the unambiguous definition of subunit stoichiometry and composition of protein complexes and the presence of small molecules. The developments in mass spectrometry provide pathways to guide downstream structure determination especially in the case of challenging biomolecules that are difficult to crystallize. The biological applications of mass spectrometry are immense which include such diverse areas as screening newborns for metabolic disorders, detection of impurities, protein-protein interactions, configuration of peptides, comparison of protein expression levels of cells grown in different media, determination of bioavailability of minerals in food, study of metabolism of drugs in vivo, toxicological and forensic applications etc.
Different techniques used in mass spectrometry such as CI, EI, ESI, FAB, FI, PDMS, MALDI etc., their instrumentation part, general theory and its application in biological research and application will be discussed in the colloquium.
